Tanner’s Special Voice: Our Talking Buddy
Some dogs make an impression the moment they walk through the door, and Tanner the Labrador Retriever mix is definitely one of those dogs. From the first time he stayed with us, Tanner brought a calm presence, a playful personality, and one very unique talent — his voice.
Tanner doesn’t just bark like most dogs. He talks. His expressive vocal sounds make it feel like he’s having real conversations with us throughout the day. Over time, we even created a little game where I ask Tanner to say “no,” and he does his best version of it with his signature voice.
It’s one of those little quirks that makes Tanner unforgettable. His playful singing and vocal responses always bring laughter to the house. There are moments where it truly feels like we’re having a back-and-forth conversation with him. It’s impossible not to smile when Tanner joins in with his own commentary.
A Gentle Leader of the Pack
While Tanner has a relaxed and easygoing personality, he also has a quiet confidence that makes him a natural helper within the pack.
In our home environment, where several dogs may be playing and interacting throughout the day, maintaining balance is important. Tanner seems to understand that instinctively.
If playtime becomes a little too wild, Tanner calmly steps in and reminds everyone to settle down. He doesn’t bark aggressively or cause tension — instead, he uses calm body language and quiet authority to restore order.
Because of this, we often joke that Tanner is our unofficial assistant. He acts like a second set of eyes and ears, helping us maintain a peaceful and balanced group of dogs.
His steady personality makes him an important presence in the pack, especially when younger or more energetic dogs need a gentle reminder to slow things down.
A Day in the Life with Tanner
Spending a full day with Tanner is a perfect balance of activity, relaxation, and companionship. His personality allows him to shift easily between playtime and calm moments, which makes him such a joy to have around.
Morning
Tanner loves starting his day slowly. Mornings often begin with quiet cuddles while the house is still peaceful. He enjoys that calm time where he can relax and soak up affection before the day fully begins.
Once the house starts moving, Tanner stretches his legs and joins the other dogs outside to explore the yard. He enjoys a little playtime and fresh air, but he never loses his calm demeanor.
One of Tanner’s best qualities is his excellent recall. Even when he’s off leash exploring, he comes back immediately when called. That reliability makes him an absolute dream to spend time with outdoors.
Midday
After some play and exploration, Tanner enjoys a bit of downtime. Like many Labrador mixes, he knows the value of a good nap.
He’ll settle in for a rest, sometimes curled up beside one of us, sometimes lounging comfortably while the house quiets down for a while.
Of course, meal time is another highlight of Tanner’s day. Labradors are known for their love of food, and Tanner is no exception. He is always ready and enthusiastic when it’s time for breakfast or dinner.
Afternoon and Evening
Later in the day, Tanner’s personality continues to shine. He’s happy to join in if the other dogs want to run and play, but he’s just as content relaxing and observing the world around him.
As evening approaches, Tanner settles into a calm, peaceful rhythm. He enjoys those quiet sunset moments when the energy of the day begins to slow down.
It’s the perfect ending to a day filled with play, companionship, and balance.
Why We Love Boarding Tanner
There are many reasons Tanner has become such a favorite in our home.
His talking voice is definitely at the top of the list. Having little “conversations” with him throughout the day never gets old. His expressive sounds and playful personality make him incredibly entertaining.
But beyond that, Tanner is also deeply affectionate. He is a sensitive dog who thrives on closeness and reassurance. If he feels he hasn’t had enough cuddles, he lets us know with gentle nudges and those soulful Labrador eyes.
Tanner’s emotional awareness is something special. He seems to know exactly when someone could use a little extra comfort.
At the same time, his calm leadership makes him an incredibly valuable presence within the pack. We often refer to him as our “gatekeeper.” He naturally watches over the other dogs, stepping in when play becomes too intense and helping maintain harmony.
That mix of calm confidence, affection, and playful spirit makes Tanner truly one of a kind.
The Bittersweet Goodbye
Every stay eventually comes to an end, and saying goodbye to Tanner is never easy.
Over time, we’ve developed a little goodbye tradition. Before Tanner leaves, we sit together on the white couch and share a few quiet moments. I hold him close, we get one last cuddle, and sometimes we squeeze in a few more of our famous “conversations.”
Tanner seems to understand the routine.
When it’s time to go home, he becomes excited again — vocal as ever — ready to see his family. His energy picks up and his voice joins in with the excitement of the moment.
But once he leaves, there’s always a quiet feeling in the house.
Dogs like Tanner leave an impression. His presence fills the home with warmth, humor, and companionship. When he’s gone, we notice the space he leaves behind.
